Are there any seafood lovers out there? Fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, octopus, squid…it’s all good stuff around here. There are so many ways to highlight the natural flavor and texture of each one, while also giving you the chance to play with new ingredients. Foodie asked for a new collection of blog recipes for the month of August, so this month kicks off with a batch of seafood recipes from this site. Take a look at the slideshow for all thirteen dishes, then introduce a few of these to your under-the-sea-loving friends and family. With summer in full swing, many of these would be nice for a quick, light midweek meal or scaled up for a weekend party.

Another Year, Another Seafood Boil

The Jolly Oyster - The Duo Dishes

Here it is, folks–another year, another boil! We are ecstatic to celebrate our 4th Annual Seafood Boil this year. On September 22, Chrystal and I gathered near the beach with friends and a hefty spread of food. On this easy Sunday afternoon, the skies were clear, the sun was blazing, and the air was filled with a nice, subtle breeze. Summer is nearly over, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying a little fun in the sun. Continue reading “Another Year, Another Seafood Boil”

Add Some Life

Thanks to Kitchen PLAY, Chrystal and I were invited to participate in the International Olive Council’s (IOC) new “Add Some Life” campaign. It’s a campaign crafted with the sole purpose of praising the all-mighty olive, and doing its part to inspire all of us to incorporate olives and olive oil into our regular diets. I was particularly excited to be a part of any campaign that champions olives, because frankly, I love those little guys. Whether green, black, stuffed, Spanish, Greek, or other, olives are already a mainstay in my diet, and olive oil is a regular item on my shopping list. Continue reading “Add Some Life”

Food Adventures At The Los Angeles Travel And Adventure Show

Last month, we were invited to take part in the Fiery Foods Challenge at the annual LA Travel and Adventure Show. Each year, thousands pack the Long Beach Convention Center to learn more about various travel destinations around the globe. While they’re there, folks sample foreign foods and beverages while enjoying entertainment from notable guest speakers, watching cultural performances of music and dance from just about every region of the world, and collecting more than enough travel brochures to plan the perfect vacation. This year’s show featured two Travel Channel hosts, Andrew Zimmern and Samantha Brown. There was even a rock climbing wall, zip line, and water activities for guests to try throughout the weekend of festivities. As you know, food and travel go hand in hand, so it only made sense that the Fiery Food Challenge would rock the stage during the show. Clean Out and Ship Out

Chili Lime Shrimp WrapsOne of the things we aim to do is clean out our respective kitchens of ingredients that may find themselves coming close to their use-by date, if you will. There are times that you buy produce with the best of intentions, but time escapes you, and you end up with a handful of items that are screaming to be used before they must go bye-bye. We scramble to come up with ways to avoid the feeling of guilt associated with wasting money on uneaten food. To that end, it is the last weekend of October–a month that has been a whirlwind of activity for both of us. There has not been as much time as we would’ve liked to cook all the amazing foods on our list as the days have slipped by, but sometimes you find a few hours to plow through the fridge, rack your brain and come up with something that will save the day.

It’s the Simple Things

Is the sandwich underrated? Maybe you hold it in high regard, but over here, it doesn’t get too much attention.  That is a shame because two slices of bread can deliver a world of wonder to your lips. When you’re home and want to create an easy lunch, the sandwich is your answer. You can give it a fancy touch or keep it plain and simple. Eat it warm or keep it cold. Pack it with a ton of fillings or leave it slim and defined. With its mix of carbs, protein and of course a little fat, the sandwich delivers just about everything you need to fuel yourself for the day.

Stuff It

Ever heard of a chayote squash? Don’t worry if you haven’t. They are a pear-shaped and colored, medium size squash that’s actually abundant in your local grocer–especially if you live in SoCal as they originate from Mexico. We experimented with the chayote last year when we made a delish and pretty soup. This time we wanted to make a Southern Louisiana dish called “mirliton” that’s hollowed out and usually stuffed with seafood. We had never tried them, mind you, and were eager to do so. Further research revealed that a mirliton is nothing more than the aforementioned chayote squash. Score!

Shrimp & Grits-Duo Dishes

Welcome back to June’s installment of the Guest Test Kitchen!  In case you forgot, or didn’t know, the Duo hails from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (so much pride, we had to say the whole name!).  Last time we were in NC, we went to breakfast right after leaving the airport.  We were thrilled to see all the Southern staples on the menu, especially grits which is actually one of our favorites.  For the whole meal, we lamented over grits missing in our lives out West.  Polenta abounds, but its Southern cousin is either ignored or poorly executed. So just for us, Claudia Hill (another UNC alum and mother to a good friend) cooked a recipe in her kitchen from Charlotte, NC featuring the prized corn mush–grits.  Take it away Claudia!
