Where’s the Beef?

Black Bean Sweet Potato Burgers 1-Duo Dishes

That’s right, there’s no beef in this burger.  It’s pure, unadulterated veggies to the max.  Sweet potatoes are a huge thing for us.  We love them.  We’ve made a few sweet potato dishes in our time, and as much as we love to toss them in a recipe, we also love to eat them just as they are straight from the oven.  When we were thinking of another way to get our sweet potato on this summer, the idea of a burger definitely came to mind.  We’ve seen a few recipes for black bean and sweet potato burgers, so our minds went to work on a way to make our own.  These patties have all the flavors you probably love in black beans and sweet potatoes with a few other surprises too.

A Quick Trip to the Aloha State

Sweet & Sour Meatballs-Duo Dishes

We’d like to take a trip to Hawaii.  It’s not too far.  We could find some cheap travel deal and skiddadle over there for a long weekend or even a full week.  Of course, we’d go to a luau, drink pineapple laced drinks, toss around coconuts, lay on sandy beaches and feel the flowery breeze blow over our faces.  Yes, we’d love to take a trip to Hawaii, but we don’t have the funds to do so at this time.  That’s too bad.  Surely, this must be a great time to visit the islands, but that trip will have to wait.  Good thing a friend hosted a Hawaiian themed dinner.  It wasn’t quite the same as being able to say mahalo after someone swirls a lei around your neck, but sometimes you have to settle.  Though we do not encourage folks to settle in other parts of their lives, in this instance, we had to do just that!

We Like It Hot…Kinda

Fajita fixins-Duo Dishes

Have you ever added spice to something with slight trepidation in your heart?  Gently shaking ground cayenne pepper on chicken cutlets or lightly tossing extra sriracha into a steaming wok of fried noodles, all the while afraid that the outcome may be too hot to handle.  We like kick in our food, but we have accidentally added a bit too much, and once it’s in there, it’s hard to cut.  Call us wimps if you like, but we just can’t handle it. We try to ride the line between spicy tingle and burnin’ ring ‘o fire mouth.  Although we both come from a line of folks who like to toss on those ‘kick your a$$ to high heaven’ or ‘not for wussy wimps’ hot sauces, we just haven’t been able to work our way up to sweating while we’re eating.  It’s not our style. We hit the kitchen with a desire for something that would ride the line without sitting too far on either side–not too bland and definitely not overwhelming.

We’d Be Your Favorite Friends

Rosemary Parmesan Crackers-Duo Dishes

We are the best guests you’ll ever want to have at a party.  Why is that, you ask?  Well, simply because we believe that walking through the door with a small gift is the least we can do for the organizer who will keep us fed and/or hydrated all night long.  There are a lot of different ways to please your host.  Depending on the occasion, walk in with a keg or a few bottles of Dom, and a smile will come to their face.  Add a couple of platters of edible goodies, and they’ll thank you wholeheartedly.  We know what it’s like to invite folks to your house, have them put their feet all over your couch, shovel down all the bacon wrapped dates, drink every Grey Goose Lemon Drop and then leave without so much as even saying “Well, it’s been fun.”   It’s not cute!  If you want to be a good friend, always come with something in hand.  You’ll be guaranteed to receive more Evites than you can stand if you remember that one little thing.  So to all of the hosts with the most out there…this one’s for you!

An Extravaganza for the Senses

EofS plates and glasses-Duo Dishes

When we received the email from Foodbuzz guaranteeing our VIP entry to the Extravaganza for the Senses fundraiser, we were of course excited. Excited may not be the word to quite describe how much we were looking forward to this event. For the last twelve years, the evening has been regarded as one of the city’s most well known food and wine charity fundraisers.  The evening’s proceedings would feature samples from some of the area’s top restaurants and wineries.  Groove-worthy music provided by none other than DJ Scott Silva, whose residencies at the Downtown Standard and Echo Park’s Short Stop are well known, would set the mood.  There was no doubt in our mind that we’d enjoy the event to the fullest.  Sponsored by the New Friends of the Saban Free Clinic and The Wine House, all proceeds would go towards the Saban Free Clinic.  Originally known as the Los Angeles Free Clinic, the organization continues to advocate and provide affordable healthcare–medical and dental–to those who need it most here in Los Angeles.  A very worthy cause indeed.

Washing Away the Blues

Cranberry Amaretto Bar-Duo Dishes

We all find ourselves in a “slump” of sorts from time to time.  What do you do to get over that unexpected touch of weekend blues?  A trip to your alcohol cabinet followed by a delectable dessert may just do the trick!  Now wait wait–we’re definitely not advocates for drowning those sorrows away with booze, nor is it a good idea to fill up on sweets to help push them away.  Plus, didn’t we say we’re trying to limit our sweets?  Oh well!  We’re over it.  This is nothing but pure butter, sugar, eggs and a touch of the spirits to put a little pep in your step.  We know we’re not the only ones who can appreciate that kind of boost from time to time.
