Have you ever wanted to try something so badly but when presented with the opportunity you blank? Swiss chard has been on the ‘to-try’ list for a very long time. We kept running into it in recipes and in the market. It’s a gorgeous vegetable, a bit entrancing with its deep green foliage and reddish-pink backbone. We finally just picked up a bunch from the store and dropped it into our basket. There. It was done. Well, almost. We still had to cook it, but we had no idea where to start. Things that make you go ‘hmmm…’, right?
Like most of our recipes, this one was put together based on what we had to work with already. It’s a pretty light list of ingredients, which makes it a keeper for the midweek meal. Plus, it adds a few extra nutrients to the typical pasta dish. Be sure not to overcook the greens. That’s what keeps all of those good-for-you vitamins alive and kickin’, along with maintaining the bite of the chard.
Spinach and Swiss Chard Pasta – Serves 4
1/2 pound rotini pasta, cooked (save water)
1/4 cup pasta water
1/2 red onion, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 bunch swiss chard, sliced
2 cups baby spinach, sliced
1 1/3 cups tomato pasta sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Olive oil
Kosher salt
1. Heat a swirl of olive oil in a pan on medium high heat and add onions and garlic. Cook until onions soften, approx. 3-5 minutes.
2. Add chard and spinach, along with pasta water and cook down until greens just begin to wilt, approx. 1-2 minutes.
3. Add pasta sauce, cream and red pepper flakes. Stir well.
4. Fold in cooked pasta until combined. Salt to taste.

This is an old family recipe. Grandma was from Italy. When she made these there were never enough!

Wouldn’t have the slightly clue what to do with with Swiss chard either. Well, maybe sautee it with garlic, but you can pretty much do that with any greens 🙂
I love Swiss chard and throw it on or into just about everyhting.
I always incorporate new ingredients into a pasta then move them over to other dishes! Nice to see someone else that does that too!
Eric
Oh I am a definite chard fan. I grew rhubarb chard last year and am trying regular swiss chard (which I think is tastier) this year – I just pray that the slugs and snails don’t chomp it all first 🙂
Big congrats on getting in the Foodbuzz Top 9 for today! Yea Duo!!!
I guess you have found the perfect answer to your question! Well done and what a great idea!
I love the Swiss chard, and recently started sauteing it with a bit of anchovy, hot pepper flakes, and olive oil. Delish!
When I first started preparing them, everyone told me to cut out the fibrous stems. I recently attended a braising class, and the instructor, from Italy, had us braise these stems, and we served them up over polenta later. Now, nothing was wasted. The braising softened them up nicely. and best of all, they were yummy.
Nobody is perfect it happens sometimes (myself included ) …as a pasta fan this is in my next list to do it!
Can I get it after running? delicious pasta = runners 🙂
All the best!
Gera
Your dish looks wonderful! I used to be in the same predicament with Swiss chard. Often I will will saute it with olive oil, garlic, and freshly grated nutmeg. This works equally well with spinach. If I may be so bold, here is a link to a recipe I made recently with Swiss chard. Tortellini Soup with Pancetta & White Beans.

I love rainbow swiss chard. My favorite ways are gratin with gruyere or jarlsberg or in soup with a little browned bacon and lentils. I’ve never had it in pasta, but I love leafy greens so I’ll definitely be trying it the next time I get my hands on some chard.
I’ve never had Swiss Chard, but then again, I’m not a big fan of veg. I won’t know what to do with it either. The pasta dish looks amazing though!
This pasta looks fab! Nothing like a bit of cream with your veg !
We love chard. It’s one of our favorite side dishes — sauteed with onion and garlic. Interestingly enough, it’s our “go to” side with enchiladas. 🙂 Not what most would see as authentic… but I’ve been doing some reading, and Lamb’s Quarters are fairly common in Mexican cuisine… so maybe this green isn’t so far off-base!!
Swiss chard is one of my favorite veggies. I love it just chopped up, and sauteed with olive oil and garlic. It’s also great in vegetable soups.
Swiss chard is on my list too! Haven’t tried it yet but your recipe looks wonderful.
I never know what to do with Swiss chard, and it always looks so good and healthy at the market. Thanks for the recipe–sounds delish!
pata tasted rili good with swiss chard.. thanx for the recipes.. sure gonna try this again this week end 🙂
cheers!!
Terrific intro to chard. It’s a fav of mine already so I expect once you tested the waters you’ll be jumping back in all the time. That is how it happened with me! GREG
I have bought it before, but it’s been the usual saute-with-garlic-and-oil for me. It’s a little dull that way and I need to get it out of my comfort zone. This recipe is just hte thing.
That happens to me sometimes! What a lovely dish!
Cheers,
Rosa
I have swiss chard on my to do list also. I like that you also added in some spinach. Now I’m inspired.
once again, i learn about another ingredient I’ve never heard of from the lovely duo dishes blog 🙂 you guys are so awesome! looks beautiful!
I love Swiss chard. I saute it with garlic, olive oil and chili flakes and then put it on homemade (or not) pizza dough with mozzarella, parmesan cheese and sometimes hot Italian sausage. It is soooo good. This pasta looks fabulous
I grew up eating lots of Swiss chard. Fortunately, I love it! I often make a stew with it using olive oil, a little chicken broth, garlic and white beans. Sometimes, I slice some Italian sausage in it too.
Your pasta dish looks great! Very creative!
I’ve only recently discovered a love of kale but Swiss chard was next on my list! I could definitely go for it in this kind of dish. Somebody hand me a fork . . . !
I love chard, especially the colorful varieties. Sometimes it grows wild in my yard too! The pasta looks great.
I love swiss chard! But overlook it too often. You put together a delicious dish, full of lovely flavors.
I love swiss chard! We haven’t made too many recipes with it, but I like your addition of spinach! Yum!
Yay for the chards! I’m a big fan. Glad you found a good use for it — the pasta looks delicious! My fork would be quite happy to take a dip in a bowl of that!
I’ve never had Swiss Chard. This end up to be a beautiful dish.
Ooh, I love to throw greens in my pasta like this. Two of my favorites. I agree, swiss chard is a gorgeous leafy green. My kind of meal!
Starting to see swiss chard popping up everywhere around here and hopefully soon I will be able to get my hands on it.
Love wilted greens and more importantly love a good quick and simple meal.
What a neat idea to get the kids to eat their vegetables: Tri-colored pasta is a great way to get them to finish their plates 😉
That’s my favorite way to cook greens–sauteed with garlic! I love that with pasta. Delicious!
I have some swiss chard that has been sitting in my crisper for several days waiting for me to figure out what to do with it!
I haven’t cooked with Swiss Chard yet either and also don’t know what to do with it. Great idea to use it in pasta, sounds delicious!
Looks good. Swiss chard is on my list “to-try” too. I’ll get to it eventually. =)
Fabulous use of the swiss chard. Love the creaminess of the sauce. I love all things that make one go HMMM>
A great way to try it out! A very healthy veggie!
Great creation! Unfortunately, swiss chard is not one of my favorite greens… along with bok choy and escarole. I can’t get into them even though I’ve tried them so many different ways. Maybe I could just use extra spinach to make this!
What a nice creative use for Swisss Chard!
I haven’t used swiss chard much – I do like it in soup but I am sure it was tasty with pasta too.
Mmmm, I love swiss chard! My brother grows a ton of it in his garden and by the end of summer we’re knee deep it in! I like it so much I often just saute it in a bit of olive oil with some garlic, crushed red pepper flakes and some chicken stock – then serve it as is. Its delicious!
I love it with any kind of past as well – and this one looks excellent. Perfect for a week night meal.
I love your use of the swiss chard here. You two are so ingenious!
Love Swiss Chard and Spinach, though I never really put them in my pasta. Sounds really delicious!
Mmmm…. chard. I love chard. This is a great way to use it!
chard is one of those that goes from colorful and pretty to gray and not pretty relatively fast…its good in soups…
Chard is definitely one of my favorite greens. I like it because it has a bit more bite to it than spinach.
it sounds like you didn’t like it. I’m not the biggest fan of swiss chard so I wouldn’t have a clue what to make with it. But I’m sure someone in the house will eat it, since it has pasta in it. LOL
Ooh, I love me some swiss chard. Ever since those Neely’s did a recipe on their show I’ve been hooked. My mom made sauteed some with turnip greens the other day and I had to slap her. Hmmph!
I totally know what you mean by having something on the to-make list forever! It’s been years now since I’ve made Swiss Chard and I keep trying to remind myself to make some….haha
rili my tummy is rumbling for this yummy pasta!! m sure gonna try this.. yumm yumm!!
Interesting! I have greens in pastas a lot, but usually with other stuff too. How was this dish?
i’ve never had swiss chard but would love to some time. this looks great. can’t beat a simple pasta dish!
I don’t think I’ve ever cooked with Swiss Chard but if I do come across it I’ll be ever so thankful that I saw this! 😀
