Rather Chili Weather We’re Having

Turkey Citrus ChiliThe winter season is well upon us though sometimes it’s difficult to tell in mostly pleasant Southern California.  What’s better during the winter months than a whole pot of warm, savory, comforting deliciousness!  We made this chili to hit that very spot.  A hearty stew loaded with meat, beans, and vegetables. Of course we had to kick it up a notch. What ingredient better to enhances all of those flavors than fresh citrus, adding a hint of sweet and tangy.  We hope this chili leaves you as warm and comforted as it has us.  It was so good, we weren’t at all ashamed it had us licking the bowl clean!

What’s the Curry?

Eggplant Butternut Squash Chicken Curry 1This is not a dish you’d normally see on the menu right before Christmas, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a tasty treat for midweek eats.  We were tipped off by a fellow Foodbuzzer that this would be the perfect way to use the random veggie pairing sitting in the pantry–butternut squash and eggplant. We made a few small tweaks, but we think the result is probably along the lines of its predecessor. Maybe even a little better! It’s kitchen discoveries like this that convince us a little creativity can go a long way. Why rush through dinner prep when you can spend a few extra minutes making a great meal?

Don’t Waste Those Herbs!

Sweet Potato & RosemaryWe live in Los Angeles, a sprawling city where lemon, lime and orange trees pop up on every lawn and rosemary bushes grow like weeds. Well, we have something to admit. There was a house in our neighborhood with six untamed rosemary bushes that had clearly been left to grow at wild abandon. So we took a few sprigs! OK, maybe a lot of sprigs. Just ripped them off with our bare hands. Now we’ve bought more than our share of fresh herbs at Trader Joe’s, Von’s and Ralph’s, so don’t judge. Our actions were probably samaritan. Those bushes needed trimming anyways! But now we have all this leftover rosemary that should surely not go to waste, so what next? Operation Waste Not!

When I Dip, You Dip, We Dip

Hazelnut Tea CookiesRemember when we were younger and cookie dipping signified Oreos in milk?  Maybe you moved on to biscotti and coffee as you got older.  Who knows, perhaps you enjoy a madeleine in your Earl Grey tea.  The point is, there’s something really satisfying and enjoyable about dunking something sweet and crunchy into something hot and liquid.  But what makes a good immersing item?  It definitely has to hold up post-submersion, so the initial crunch factor is key.  It should have its own individual flavors that won’t cause interference, making subtlety and cohesiveness are important.   And size is important too.  Something small enough to fit the round of a glass or mug, but sizeable enough to provide at least two chomps.  We found a cookie that has all three.  Well, maybe two and a half.  It has body, and the flavors are delicate.  But the size.  Well, you can get at least two bites out of it, but will you be able to hold yourself back from swallowing it whole?  That we cannot guarantee.
